School Based Health Centers

As the school year starts (already!) and you are figuring out bus times and collecting school supplies, you need to be aware of the kinds of things your child might be exposed to or invited to participate in at school. It’s tough enough to raise your children right these days, and it used to be we could (mostly) trust the schools. These days parents must be more attentive than ever about what’s going on during the hours of the day. An emerging trend that seems like a good idea but is not are School Based Health Centers.

A School-based Health Center (SBHC) is a health clinic that:

  • is located in or near a school or school facility

  • is organized or promoted through school, community, or health care provider relationships

  • provides primary health services to children by health care providers in accordance with state and federal law

  • meets any other requirements necessary for the operation of a School-based Health Center

These are much more than a nurse at school to administer meds and first aid. SBHCs may be on or off-site of the school and offer a broad range of services intended to replace a child’s family doctor. Services may include (but not limited to): Routine pediatric care (including immunizations, sick visits, & well-child visits); mental and behavioral health services (such as assessment, counseling, and prescription medication); reproductive counseling & birth control prescription and management (!!!); and even care and screening for sexually transmitted diseases.

Say WHAT??!! Treating children without the presence/consent of a parent or guardian is supposed to be against the law. But this anti-parent agenda wants to skirt that detail. This is why you have to pay attention to the stack of forms you may have been asked to sign at the beginning of the year. Be on the alert for a convenient “pre-consent” form at the beginning of the year. The consent form could include anything from taking surveys to health screening tests to medications and/or vaccinations.

Stand For Health Freedom has quite a lot more information about this. Please educate yourself, your teachers, and your school administrators

Surveys in school are another problematic trend that I’ll discuss in detail later. Even if your school does not participate in a SBHC, it is likely that there are survey's going around. Suffice to say that you should not allow your child to take them.
